After having reviewed their album (see the review here), we planned to shoot a Krupke show. Originally I didn’t I didn’t think I would be able to attend, but sometimes things fall into place… Here are a few thoughts.
First of all, it is undeniable that Mike Rosenthal (vocals, keys, xylophone) puts 100% energy into his performance. In fact, he commented on being glad to be at a venue with air conditioning but lamented that it did not really make a difference considering he was going to be sweaty either way. Krupke is theatrical and explosive and they definitely put on an entertaining show. The talent, with a couple multi-instrumentalists and each member providing vocals, is also evident. Along with Mike, the band consists of Fiona Ryan (clarinet, violin, vocals), Kate Pittman (drums, vocals) and Joe Verkuyl (guitar, vocals). Joe offers more melodic vocals in contrast with Mike’s much more dramatic vocals. While they likely sound their tightest and most put-together at their more harmonic moments, the stark contrast between harmonic and explosive showcases their bold and unique style. Seeing Krupke live is certainly an experience, and it’s also one we recommend.
I should also note that Krupke were incredibly kind and gave us slap bracelets (our first buying shots for bands gift!). Check them out, pick up a slap bracelet and buy them a shot!
I wasn’t able to see Volcano Playground, but Rachel shot their set and only had good things to say. We’re definitely looking forward to checking them out again.
