The Darcys – House Built Around Your Voice

Band: The Darcys
7″: House Built Around Your Voice
Shot of choice: Jameson

We had the privilege of doing shots with The Darcys and they were part of our first feature. They put on a hell of a good show doing the ConstantinesShine A Light, but The Darcys have much more to offer than a good rendition of the Constantines. This 4-piece consists of Jason Couse (vocals, piano, guitar), Mike le Riche (guitar, keys, vocals), Dave Hurlow (bass) and Wes Marskell (drums). Together, as The Darcys, they are, without a doubt, one of the true gems of the Toronto indie scene. Pay attention to them because they are set for big things.

Earlier this year, The Darcys put out their 7”, House Built Around Your Voice, in anticipation of their full-length album, Young Believers, slated to be released early in the new year. There is so much talent and promise in these two songs that it leaves you wanting to hear more. There are definite Radiohead and Constantines influences, but The Darcys meld their influences to make the sound completely their own.

Side A, “House Built Around Your Voice” offers an irresistible drum beat and Jason’s brooding vocals will inevitably draw you in immediately. Side B, “Edmonton to Purgatory,” starts off a little more explosive, but a change of tempo and a stand-out guitar riff leads into vocals from Jason that are almost pleading with you to listen. House Built Around Your Voice displays intricate arrangements and time-changes with purposeful distortion that showcase The Darcys’ ability to capture your attention, somehow managing to sound big and bold without being overpowering.

We are eagerly anticipating the release of The Darcys’ full-length sophomore album, Young Believers, which was produced by The DearsMurray Lightburn. The full-length also features guest appearances by members of Broken Social Scene, Islands and Stars. With gifted production and renowned guests, in combination with the clear, raw talent of every single member of The Darcys, you too should be looking forward to Young Believers.

You can download their 7″ here. We strongly suggest you do so. Give them your email and receive two amazing songs. And don’t forget to buy them a shot when you see them live!
