Date of show: June 1, 2013

Jane’s Party celebrated the release of their sophomore full-length Hot Noise at The Cameron House with two back-to-back sold-out shows. After releasing their debut The Garage Sessions in 2009, touring Canada and playing countless shows since, fans have been anxious to get a hold of their new songs on record. In 2010 Jane’s Party released their “Alone Together” single followed by a self-titled EP in 2011, but there were so many songs part of their live set that hadn’t been recorded yet. Hot Noise was certainly worth the wait and family, friends and fans made sure to lend their support to the Toronto-based 4-piece.

Aside from their prolific songwriting, the band’s biggest asset is likely their harmonies, with Devon Richardson, Tom Ionescu and Jeff Giles taking turns on lead vocals. As the band met while studying music in university, they’ve clearly put in their work to hone their abilities. The switching of instruments between songs never hinders their performance, as they do it seamlessly and effortlessly. More than anything, it’s obvious the band has fun on stage, possessing an energy that permeates the crowd while they play.

The first single off the album and a CBC Music #1 hit “‘Til You Got Yours” was a standout in their set, but songs like “Hot Noise Pt. 1” and “Alone Together” also had the crowd captivated. Their upbeat songs had the crowd dancing and hollering at the band on stage, but perhaps the parents and grandparents in the audience helped subdue the crowd so things never got too rowdy at the early show.

The band played most of their new album, but they also managed to fit in some covers and some guest appearances as well. I had the privilege of seeing Kirty and Devin Cuddy join Jane’s Party on stage, but those that attended the second set at midnight were treated to seeing Whitney Rose and Sam Cash. All around, Jane’s Party planned a fantastic night for those that wanted to see both sets (and many did).

The band’s set ended with a personal favourite – “Bringing Me Down” – but the set didn’t quite end there. As a finale for the early 10pm set, Jane’s Party didn’t even leave the stage before playing a cover of John Lennon’s “Jealous Guy” for their encore.

With a sound that harkens back to the days of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, etc. combined with their own fresh, sweet sounds, the band delivered an album that you can listen to over and over. If you need to see them live to be convinced, we recommend you see Jane’s Party at one of their many shows at NXNE. See their website for details.
