Live in the GTA? Can’t make it into the big city for North by North East but still want to fill your weekend with music? Fear not. The largest free music festival in Canada, Burlington’s Sound of Music Festival has got you covered.
Voted one of the top 100 festivals in Ontario, the all-ages, outdoor festival takes place on the Burlington waterfront. It boasts 5 stages along the water and offers a high caliber line-up from a wide variety of genres. All for the low, low price of FREE. What better way is there to welcome in summer than spending a day/night/or even the entire weekend there? Plus, it’s family-friendly so you can bring your dad along for Fathers’ Day!
Here’s a little taste of the bands playing over the course of the four days:
Thursday June 14th
Born Ruffians (8:15pm) and Arkells (9:45pm)
Friday June 15th
Peter Elkas (7pm), local St Catharines-favourites, The Bends (8pm), Julie Doiron (8:15pm), plus Big Sugar (9:30pm), and Basia Bulat (9:45pm) to close out the night.
Saturday June 16
East Coaster Tim Chaisson & Morning Fold (2pm), San Sebastian (2:15pm), Miss “Call Me Maybe” herself, Carly Rae Jepsen (3:45pm), Jane’s Party (7pm), The Rural Alberta Advantage (8pm) and headliner Wintersleep (9:30pm).
Sunday June 17th
Whale Tooth (1pm), Saint Alvia (2:15pm), and headliners Treble Charger (3:30pm), hometown heroes Walk Off The Earth (3:45pm) and Mother Mother (5:30pm).
When’s the next time you’ll ever be able to see even one of these bands for free?
Quite possibly never.
Music starts at 7 pm on Thursday night and 1 pm Friday through Sunday. There’s even a carnival and a Crafter’s Marketplace to fill up your time between sets. Full schedule details as well as driving directions can be found on the festival website.
