The Dirty Mags celebrated leaving for tour in total style. They had great openers for the night, including Hugh Oliver, who brought along his ukelele and hilarious songs. He introduced the Toronto-based 4-piece, comprised of Mike Kaminski (vocals), Justin Lemaire (guitar), Greg Peters (bass) and Peter Gosling (drums).
The crowd was anxious for The Dirty Mags to start their late night set, so by the time the band started, the crowd was ready to dance and mosh the night away. Their garage/grunge is quite catchy, which has garnered them comparisons to The Strokes. While Lemaire’s guitar work certainly drives their sound, the real gem is Kaminski’s powerful, raw vocals, combined with a commanding stage presence.
After pulling myself out of the sweaty mosh pit, I realized that I should have seen this band much sooner. The fans in the pit will make sure you participate (or get out), so if you’re looking for a good sweat, see The Dirty Mags.
The Coppertone’s charming stage presence is obvious pretty quickly into her set, but Amanda Zelina doesn’t mess around with stage banter. Instead, she aims to impress with her wailing guitar and rich blues rock sound. Bassist Pat McCormack plays with such energy that he sometimes steals the attention away from Zelina, but together they put together a powerful set meant to rock your socks right off. By the end of the set, the crowd seemed to be completely enamoured with Zelina and rightly so.
