Buddy Black is a Toronto-based punk outfit fronted by Buddy Black himself. Mikey Gibbons and Ross Martin round out the 3-piece. Their show at the Bovine Sex Club was in celebration of their self-titled EP release and what a celebration it was! The crowd was completely into it, though their late set time might have had an effect on the turnout, as some people seemed to have left before the set.
Buddy Black’s sound is boozy, brazen punk rock tinged with a bit of rockabilly. There’s an anthem-like feel to some of the tunes, like “Don’t Take (Bring) Your Guns to Town,” which are catchy yet still hold on to that edge. Black’s vocals are raspy and raw, really emphasizing the passion in his delivery.
They’ve got a solid stage presence, too. An amusing moment was when, unbeknownst to the frontman, Gibbons put on a helmet with a cowbell attached, which became part of the percussion. Martin banged on it a couple times before Black reacted, “You guys are pricks.” All in all, it was a great set and catching this highly energized show was great way to spend a Friday night.
