Peter Elkas – Repeat Offender

Artist: Peter Elkas
Album: Repeat Offender

Toronto-based Peter Elkas is set to release Repeat Offender, his 3rd full-length album and a follow up to 2007’s Wall of Fire and 2004’s Party of One. Although I’m not as well versed in his previous solo work, Elkas continues to mature and hone in on his own sound, growing more and more after the demise 90s alternative rock band Local Rabbits. Furthermore, Elkas exercised his recording ability, as this album was mostly recorded in his basement with co-producer Ian McGettigan (Thrush Hermit), with some work done at Giant Studio (owned by Sebastien Grainger and James Shaw).

Peter Elkas’ smooth and soulful voice, paired with timeless lyricism, has the ability to grab a hold of you and leave you wanting more. He certainly had my attention throughout all 10 songs on the album. Opening up with “Anticipation,” there’s pleading in Elkas’ voice as he sings, “There’s only so long that I can wait.” The song features a mesmerizing organ and a chorus driven by drums and horns, which is a great introduction to the rest of the album that is full of layers of piano and horns. The album pays homage to a few musicians Elkas admires. The nod to Bruce Springsteen (and other rock ‘n’ rollers) can be heard on the songs that are a little more guitar-focused, “Cruel Thing To Do” and title track “Repeat Offender.”

“Cool Thing To Do,” which has already been circulating a little bit as the lead single for the album, is a real toe-tapper of a tune and one of my favourites. A particular favourite is “Melody” with its opening lyrics, “Let me tell you ‘bout this girl, she came and wrecked my world,” that immediately had my attention. This song, though sadder lyrically, is so upbeat, really touching upon that Frankie Valli influence. The album clocks in just under 38 minutes and it’s well worth your attention.

Repeat Offender will be released on February 22, 2011 via New Scotland Records, marking the first time Elkas’ work will appear on wax. He’ll be promoting the album with residencies in March, performing every Tuesday at The Dakota Tavern, as well as Wednesdays and Thursdays in Kingston and Guelph, respectively.
