Allie Hughes Valentine’s Wedding Spectacular at the Drake Underground

Allie Hughes @ the Drake Underground, 02-09-11

Date of show: February 9, 2011

Allie Hughes is certainly a performer. She combines her theatrical influences with her musicality to put together a storyline that completely entertains. To set the scene, Hughes has been playing bride and bringing guests on stage to join her as groom (Nick Rose) and bridesmaids (Kelly McMichael and Jessica Tollefsen), in addition to her backing band, which is comprised of Bram Gielen (bass), Randy Lee (violin), Adam Hindle (drums), Jordan Howard (guitar), and John Spence (keys). It’s a talented roster that completes her melodramatic pop sound.

Her voice is heavily operatic-tinged, which should speak to her vocal prowess, but that doesn’t mean she can’t put together a good pop song (case in point: “Not the Stars”). After going through love-induced bliss before getting married on stage, followed by heartbreak, Hughes covers all the bases, both vocally and dramatically. Hughes’ themed set is a prime example of the kind of awesome that results from vision, talent and passion. Look out for Miss Hughes; if you’re not prepared she might just stun you and knock you off your feet.

After a mediocre comedic opening from Chris Locke, Henri Fabergé and the Adorables started off the night of music. Led by Henry Fletcher, this musical collective has seen many faces grace the stage under this moniker, but always at the heart of the band is Fletcher bringing his flare for the dramatic. The scene was a polygamist joined by his wives on stage. They all stayed true to their character, including in their silly banter. Oh, and it helps that there were a couple dudes in the audience also dressed in character dancing right in front of the stage. But aside from the theatrics, Henri Fabergé and the Adorables deliver dance-able pop tunes with delightful harmonies that just scream fun. It was the perfect start to this theatrical night!

As far as supergroup cover bands are concerned, Dwayne Gretzky, regardless of their roster for the night, always delivers a party set to remember. At the core of Dwayne Gretzky is always Sweet Thing, or at least a portion of the crew. The lady of the night, Allie Hughes, joined the band for a couple tunes, as well. The band knows how to rock the stage, playing hits from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, and… well, you get the idea. It’s a rocking set that gets the ladies and gents dancing, or at least bobbing their heads in enjoyment. Time and again, I’m shown that Dwayne Gretzky will always make sure you have a good time.
