Band: Dinosaur Bones
EP: Birthright
Shot of choice: whiskey
It’s been quite a year for Dinosaur Bones! After releasing their self-titled EP in 2008, the boys in Dinosaur Bones put out their Royalty/Ice Hotels 7” earlier this year. They’ve had much acclaim in their short band life leading to the recent announcement of being signed to Dine Alone Records, along with some announcements that D-Bones fans have been looking forward to – more releases. Dinosaur Bones have been recording with Jon Drew (Fucked Up, Tokyo Police Club) With that, Dinosaur Bones just released their Birthright EP, which features both songs from their 7” as well as 2 new tunes, all in anticipation of their forthcoming My Divider LP, expected to be released in early 2011.
We recently caught a Dinosaur Bones set at The Horseshoe Tavern (and bought them shots!) and we’ve been excited about new material in the works ever since. Perhaps you may need an introduction to Dinosaur Bones, but if you’re from Toronto this shouldn’t be the case. This quintet is comprised of Ben Fox (vocals, guitar), Josh Byrne (guitar), Dave Wickland (keys, vocals), Branko Scekic (bass, vocals), and Lucas Fredette (drums, vocals). Their sound is refreshing and dynamic, yet there is a brooding resonance that echos throughout each of their songs. “Royalty” is a song worthy of sing-a-longs with its pop sensibilities, but also calls upon their NYC garage influences. Fox’s lulling vocals are particularly gripping on “Ice Hotels,” but the textures in their arrangements are also particularly apparent. The new tunes, “We Use Our Hands” and title track “Birthright,” both have that garage-like feel and invite you to sway along to the melodies juxtaposed against noisy riffs and hard-hitting drums. Birthright will have you looking forward to My Divider; it certainly grabbed my attention.
Dinosaur Bones will be celebrating their Birthright EP release at The Horseshoe Tavern on November 9th, which also happens to be the 17th Anniversary of Bookie’s Nu Music Nites. The show will also feature Monster Truck, Rah Rah and The Balconies. It’s going to be a great night with plenty to celebrate. Oh and it’s FREE, so you really have no excuse not to be there!
