[Note: We had some technical difficulties and, as a result, we had to take this photo after they took their shot. Two of the boys so kindly offered to fake it, but clearly not everyone got the memo… so I’m just going to be honest about the whole situation.]
Date of show: September 11, 2010
Shot of choice: whiskey
I had only seen Dinosaur Bones once before and they are honestly such a treat to see. I must say that they have some of the most loyal and energetic fans I have ever seen, which offsets their somewhat darker and brooding sound. This was their first show in Toronto in a while; I think that last show was with Plants and Animals. Dinosaur Bones are a 5-piece Toronto-based band made up of Ben Fox (vocals, guitar), Dave Wickland (keys, vocals), Branko Scekic (bass, vocals), Lucas Fredette (drums, vocals) and, new to D-Bones, Josh Byrne (guitar). It was actually Byrne’s first show in Toronto, second show ever with Dinosaur Bones.
They played an energetic set, so energetic that Wickland exploded his amp. Despite the technical difficulties, they keep up the pace and still kept their fans captivated. Fox’s voice suits their sound so well, with rich basslines from Scekic, sweet melodies on the keys from Wickland, textured guitar riffs from Fox and Byrne, and top-notch drumming from Fredette. It’s also easy to see what makes these boys so charming. They gave out many thanks, particularly to The Most Serene Republic and The Order of Good Cheer (more on these two here). Scekic also decided to try out something new with the crowd. After asking how the crowd was doing and receiving the typical cheer in response, he said, “Instead of yelling ‘woo’, yell out how you feel.” He tried it a couple times and the rapt crowd obliged.
Scekic revealed that the boys are about to record a couple new tracks, so be on the lookout for some new material. Dinosaur Bones released a self-titled EP in 2008 and their Royalty/Ice Hotels 7” earlier this year, but fans and friends alike are eagerly anticipating the release of their LP. In the meantime, they’re still playing shows (no new Toronto dates announced yet, though) and we highly recommend you take the time to buy these guys a shot!
