Band: METZ
7″: Negative Space
Shot of choice: Wild Turkey
METZ is made up of Alex Edkins (vocals, guitar), Chris Slorach (bass) and Hayden Menzies (drums). I’ll be honest and say that, although I had heard the name floating around before, I had never actually heard anything by METZ until I heard about their 7” release party that happened on August 13th, which I was not able to attend. This is their third 7” release and it is noisy, loud, and wonderful.
Side A features “Negative Space,” which is just over 3 minutes and it is some serious in-your-face punk. Side B, “Automat,” is a little more experimental, and also a little longer. This Ottawa/Toronto-based indie trio really does grungy experimental punk right, with clear influences from the early ‘90s. I was sincerely impressed and so I took it upon myself to listen to some of their other stuff. Personally, I feel this is likely their best, and most accessible, release yet.
I’m really curious about what a METZ show might be like. I would expect a complete ruckus, which would have been great to see at their release show in the little Shop basement that is Parts and Labour. When you see them out, don’t forget to buy these guys a shot!
