Date of show: August 21, 2010
Shot of choice: Jameson (except they wanted to be different and asked for Wild Turkey)
Lordy Lordy is Justin Myler (vocals, guitar), Bryan Ward (drums, harmonica, vocals) and Justin Christie (guitar, slide guitar). This psychedelic rock trio were second to rock the stage that night at Rancho Relaxo. To be honest, we knew nothing about this band, save the one song on their MySpace, but they impressed us. In fact, they drew a fairly impressive crowd, at least given the size of Rancho Relaxo and given the fact they were merely an opening act. It turned out that Lordy Lordy probably had a bigger draw than headliners Sunfields, who were celebrating their album release. [More on Sunfields‘ set, as well as The Blooming Rosebuds, can be found here.]
An explanation for the bigger draw may be that two members of Lordy Lordy already have a fan base for another project. For those of you that are familiar with Black Hat Brigade, you are surely familiar with the two common members of Lordy Lordy and Black Hat Brigade, which is currently on a hiatus. Perhaps this is what makes Lordy Lordy seem so put together, as there is already an existing chemistry between Bryan and Justin Myler. Justin Christie appears to be a good fit with these guys. He also tears it up on guitar and adds texture to their, at times, bluesy sound. Justin Myler brings his haunting vocals to the forefront and for a group of young guys, there is a notable maturity in their sound.
We’re hoping to hear more from these guys. With more time, we’re sure these talented fellas can push themselves to do great things. For now, I think I’d settle for more songs up on that MySpace! Do yourself a favour and get yourself to a Lordy Lordy show and buy these guys a shot!
