Authentic: Young Rival’s Journey Through Canada – 6:45pm @ Bloor Hot Docs Cinema
We don’t often cover films at music festivals, but last year I really enjoyed watching Ages & Stages: The Story of The Meligrove Band. Last Frame Pictures directed and produced that documentary and when I heard they had a new doc to showcase, this time on Hamilton’s Young Rival, I was immediately interested.
Much like Last Frame Pictures’ previous work, this documentary involves interviews with the band and their friends (other musicians), as while as live performance footage. The band discusses what it is like to be a touring band, with all of the ups and downs included; some of those ups and downs were even captured live. The candid interviews make evident the band’s resiliency, their passion for music, and the community that supports one another. On top of all of that, it is quickly evident that everyone in the band is both hilarious and extremely nice.
While it’s unclear when this documentary will be available for viewing now post-festival, I certainly recommend you check it out when you get the chance. If you’re a fan of Canadian indie or you’re just generally curious about what a tour is like for a band, this is a must-see.
Young, Wild & Free: A NXNE Afterpary @ Grossman’s Tavern
While this showcase was not officially a part of NXNE, I couldn’t resist the lineup, which was composed of mostly NXNE artists anyway. It was a great documentary and I was glad to partake in the celebration afterwards.
