CMW Preview: The Matinée

The Matinée

Chiara recommends The Matinée
Friday March 22 – 12am at The Supermarket
The Agency Group showcase w/ Folly & The Hunter (8pm), Fine Times (9pm), White Ash Falls (10pm), Sam Cash and the Romantic Dogs (11pm), The Washboard Union (1am), Legato Vipers (2am)

Hailing from Vancouver, B.C., The Matinée is comprised of five longtime friends: Matt Layzell (vocals), Matt Rose (guitar, pedal steel, banjo, mandolin, vocals), Geoff Petrie (guitar, percussion, vocals), Mike Young (bass, keys, vocals), and Pete Lemon (drums, vocals). With group vocals and the added oomph of sex appeal provided by the pedal steel, these roots rockers are a little bit of everything – from honest and soulful, downtrodden Americana, to easy Southern porch-sitting banjo-plucking folk, to “kick up yer heels” boot-stomping country – plus the slightest touch of uplifting celtic for good measure. But perhaps most importantly, they are just a whole lot of fun.

Their most recent single “Young and Lazy” is one of those songs that everyone can identify with regardless of age. Conjuring up memories of booze-soaked, carefree beach days that last late into the night, close your eyes and you could swear you’re 18 again. Breathe in and you can almost smell that sweet balmy West Coast air. While this track highlights the sweet leisures of youth, the band is actually a testament to what years of hard work and dedication can get you. From a 3rd place finish at the 2011 Peak Performance Project to nabbing the accolades of “Group/Duo of the Year ” at the 2012 BC Country Music Association Awards, their 5+ years of doing the touring grind are starting to garner them the attention they deserve.

Produced by Steve Berlin (REM, Tragically Hip), the band’s debut LP We Swore We’d See the Sunrise was recently released via Light Organ Records. With a 4AM last call, this is quite a likely occurrence during CMW so why not spend part of it with The Matinée? As an added incentive, their showcase is stacked with other up-and-coming B.C. bands such as Fine Times, White Ash Falls and The Washboard Union, meaning you are in for a guaranteed good time.

And if you weren’t already desperate for summer vacation, you sure will be after watching their video for “Young and Lazy.”
