Young Guns put on an exciting performance. Unfortunately, not too many Canadians are aware of UK’s Young Guns because the band has yet to release an album in Canada. Their second full-length album Bones is already out in the UK and was released earlier this month in the US. As some folks came out to the Horseshoe just for a night of free music, many in the crowd were not too familiar with the band. However, it was pretty encouraging to see a couple fans right up front singing along, clearly ahead of the game in Canada.
Most of the crowd started off rather hesitant, standing far back away from the stage, but frontman Gustav Wood was determined to win the crowd over with their danceable rock tinged with a harder edge. Wood is quite an exciting frontman to watch, as he encouraged the crowd to participate and sing along and he danced all over the stage. Eventually some in crowd moved up and some even started dancing, which had bassist Simon Mitchell smiling. The band played a good mix of songs from their forthcoming album as well as their debut full-length All Our Kings Are Dead. The absolute highlight was the current single and title track for the new album, “Bones,” which closed out their set. That catchy anthemic tune has me wanting to sing along every time I hear it.
It was a bit of a weird Canadian debut for Young Guns, but after the album is out later this fall, I suspect Young Guns will be on the radar of many more Canadians. And judging by the new fans that waited to talk to the band after their set, their live show certainly has the ability to win over new fans.
