An Indie Machine Showcase with Ketch Harbour Wolves and The Dirty Nil

The Dirty Nil @ Silver Dollar, 16-09-11

Date of show: September 16, 2011

Hamilton’s The Dirty Nil were the 3rd band to take the stage at the Silver Dollar. Already with a fan base in Toronto, their set saw an increase in numbers in the crowd. The young and energetic 3-piece is comprised of Luke Bentham (vocals, guitar), Dave Nardi (bass) and Kyle Fisher (drums).

Before The Dirty Nil went on stage, David Marskell with The Indie Machine told me the band was a must-see. I’d heard some of their tunes, but I was blown away when I saw their set. As these guys proudly sing about “Fuckin’ Up Young”, they certainly put on a loud, fun set without taking themselves very seriously.

Ketch Harbour Wolves

Ketch Harbour Wolves is a band that I had been meaning to see for quite some time. Their album Anachronisms caught my attention (as well as the attention of Degrassi, apparently). This dynamic 5-piece is based out of Toronto. The band is fronted by Jonathan Tyrrell on guitar with his deep, unique vocals. He is joined by Kristjan Bergey (keys), Liam Brown (guitar, vocals), Scott Winter (bass) and Brian Urbanik (drums).

While songs like “Breakdown” (the one featured on Degrassi) are incredibly catchy, there is always an underlying brooding nature to their sound, which is even evident with their live show. Ketch Harbour Wolves sounded tight, really showcasing their chemistry on stage. Even though the turnout was pretty good, it would have been nice to see more people present for this set.
