Excited to be home, even if only for a short time between touring stints, Dinosaur Bones played an energized set to their hometown fans and friends. The 5-piece is comprised of Ben Fox (vocals, guitar), Dave Wickland (keys, vocals), Branko Scekic (bass, vocals), Josh Byrne (guitar) and Lucas Fredette (drums, vocals). Looking onto the stage, there was certainly a lot of hair shaking around. Although I wouldn’t guess Dinosaur Bones’ broody indie rock encouraged dancing, there were a few dancers up front. The crowd favourites still seem to be “Royalty” “Ice Hotel” and “N.Y.E,” songs that have been around the longest, but their whole set had the crowd completely into it. It helps that the guys have an irresistible charm and an undeniable stage presence. Dinosaur Bones continues to tour My Divider, picking up speed and plenty more fans along the way.
“When We Were here the last couple times there were probably 1000 less people here.” Brooklyn’s Bear Heads were treated to a night with a couple local favourites, giving the band the chance to win over new fans. The 4-piece is made up of Dylan Rau (vocals, guitar), Ted Feldman (guitar, keys), Val Loper (bass, percussion), and TJ Orscher (drums). Bear Hands‘ indie rock has a bit of a UK pop feel to it, making their set one that got much of the crowd dancing. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next time Bear Hands makes their way to Toronto, they are greeted by a better turnout than in past, which they rightly deserve.
The addition of The Darcys to this already great lineup sweetened this show quite a bit. The Darcys played a solid set of songs from their forthcoming record, but, as an added bonus, they added a couple Steely Dan covers to their set, “Home At Last” and “Peg.” The covers fit so well into their set that you’d almost believe they were Darcys songs, as they really worked with the songs to fit their sound. As the band prepares themselves for their release in the late summer/early fall, it’s nice to see the band expand their set a little more.
