Ruby Coast have this boozy allure that makes people want to dance or jump or simply party. The core of the band is Justice McLellan (vocals, guitar), Keith Bradford (keys, vocals) and Corey Marshall (drums). The band recently had a lineup change, losing their guitarist and bassist, but gaining a new bassist. With youth on their side, these guys draw the crowd in. Ruby Coast’s party appeal stems from their catchy hooks, a fun, energetic presence with an ability to absolutely own the stage. They had the crowd singing along, right up against the stage determined to feed off the energy from the band. Ruby Coast certainly knows how to make sure the crowd has a good time and it was a great way to close out the night.
Graham Wright, who may be known as the keyboardist of Tokyo Police Club, likely had the biggest draw. Although he had to encourage people to move up a little, much of the crowd seemed eager to get a chance to hear Wright’s solo project. Backing him was The Good Times Band, which is comprised of other familiar musicians including Feurd Moore (The Elwins), Will Currie (Will Currie & The Country French), and Spencer MacEachern (Spencer MacEachern and the Fabulous Yawn). Wright had previously released an EP, The Lakes of Alberta, and a single, “Crooked Moon,” but the songs he previewed from his soon to be released Shirts vs Skins seem to make for a much fuller sound. It was a great set from an obviously talented musician and it had me looking forward to the release of Shirts vs Skins at the end of the end of June.
Loom is Brooke Manning’s musical project, although she enlists other musicians to join her. On this evening, it was Thom Gill on keys and backup vocals. There is something so pure in the simplicity of the arrangements, with Manning on electric guitar and Gill adding effects. Pay attention to the recent Nevado Records find, as she’s sure to steal your heart with her hauntingly beautiful airy vocals and adorable stage presence.
