Date of show: April 21, 2011
Welcome to the $5 Rap Show, which takes place every 5 weeks or so at Rancho Relaxo. On this evening, Toolshed headlined to celebrate their CD release for “The Lost.” Unfortunately, their CDs were tied up at the border and didn’t make it to the show. The guys made the most of it, promising a download that night to anyone who fronted the money for a CD, which would be received at a later date. More importantly, they delivered an energetic set to convince the crowd their CD was worth waiting for. Timbuktu and Chokeules, the guys the make up Toolshed, make an intense combo, getting everyone up at the front completely into it. Not that anyone needed to be bribed with Twizzlers, but handing out the liquorice really was the icing on the cake.
Buck 65 (born Richard Terfry) was the special surprise guest, though I’m not sure how much of a surprise it was by the time he hit the stage. Impressively, Buck 65 was setting up while performing, as he was also behind the turntable, but didn’t want to make the crowd wait. With an unassuming stage presence, Buck 65 spits out rhymes that are quite, well, dirty, but it’s also hard not to be enthralled with his lyricism. His facial expressions and intermittent dance moves help add to a great set. There’s humour and sass, but Buck 65 has completely carved out a niche with what he does and his Juno Awards and nominations are a testament to his influence on Canadian hip hop. At the end of the set, Buck 65 said he hopes to be back for another $5 Rap Show. Now, can you argue with seeing Buck 65 for $5? I think not.
Brooklyn’s Loki da Trixta started off the night in fine fashion. He was extremely interactive with the audience, getting them to respond accordingly. As he asked, “How you doing?” the crowd was instructed to respond with “Aight.” Checking in with the the crowd thoughout the set, not everyone got it every time, but the crowd certainly made the effort. Apparently no one can argue with the words, “dance sexy robot,” as Loki da Trixta even got the crowd dancing a little.
More or Les and Wordburglar run the $5 Rap Show, but they also entertain between sets, including joining each other for some songs. Wordburglar made it clear, if you show up to the $5 Rap Show early, “you get treats.”
