Artist: Laura Peek
Album: Key
Halifax singer-songwriter Laura Peek is set to release a follow-up to her 2007 release From the Photographs, which marks a solo venture minus backing band The Winning Hearts. She is not without help, though, as her sophomore full-length showcases beautifully layered arrangements alongside her skillful piano work. Peek’s lovely vocals are notably sweet and comforting, complemented by whimsical songwriting.
In particular, “Stay Sharp” stands out on this 10-song album, capturing all of the elements found throughout the album. It’s an upbeat, playful tune that is an instant-smile-inducer, while there are songs like “Away From the Harbour” and “Laundry” that are slower and comparatively heavier and seem to draw the listener in. “On the Shelf” possesses a familiarity, as Peek has borrowed a melody from folklorist Helen Creighton, while adding her own thoughtful lyrics. Overall, Key is a beautiful album, a shining example of her personality and talent and well worth the wait after three years worth of work.
Key will be released on February 8th via Just Friends Records.
