As soon as Ingrid Gatin started her set, her sultry passionate vocals stunned me, as well as everyone in the room. Despite the venue being less than ideal, with sound issues due to a blown out system from a previous show, her captivating vocals filled the room. I was sold on Gatin on vocals and keys alone… but then she pulled out the accordion. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard the accordion sound so beautiful, and certainly not in a live setting, but her giftedness with the instrument makes it sing. Lyrically, the songs have the ability to find a way to reach into your heart so you can easily identify with her passion. Her stage presence is unassuming, as she’s so charming (she even stopped for a moment mid-song to say bye to guests that were leaving!), but she commands that stage in a way that shows she plays with her whole heart.
Gatin played a fairly short set, accompanied by Jill Martin, who provided lovely harmonies. She had been touring Ontario for a while, including a couple previous stops in Toronto, but she’s heading back home to Winnipeg. I’d love to see her again, perhaps in a less bustling venue, as The Central always seems to have a lot going on. As far as singer-songwriters go, Ingrid Gatin brings something unique to the table and I think that’s worth your attention. She certainly has mine.
