Buying Shots (Sorta) for Sandman Viper Command at The Drake Underground

Sandman Viper Command @ The Drake Underground, 09-17-10
[Note: We couldn’t manage to round up all the members at the same time, but Amanda did get this epic shot of Rob Janson. Not pictured: bottle of Crown.]

Date of show: September 17, 2010
Shot of choice: We never bothered to ask because instead of doing shots, we drank Crown Royal straight from the bottle with the band. Hardcore.

What do you expect when you hear the name Sandman Viper Command? Personally, I expect some badass crazy punk music. I’ve heard them a few times now, doing their own originals as well as cover sets, so trust me when I say that is certainly not their sound. They bring a mix of rock and roll and a sort of groove rock. I actually spoke to Josh Byrne (new guitarist to Dinosaur Bones) later on in the night and his praise for the band was, “If you’re a fan of rock and roll, you’re a fan of Sandman Viper Command.” These guys were second on stage, between The Darcys and The Golden Dogs, and they put on a hell of a show. (More on The Darcys set can be found here and more on The Golden Dogs set can be found here.)

On lead vocals and guitar is Rob Janson, and his voice is so unique that you can’t help but pay attention. The boys in Sandman Viper Command are all young, and with that they bring a youthful exuberance. They have great energy on set, with guitarist Daniel Reardon seemingly in an almost euphoric state at their slower moments and both Dan and Aaron Harvey (bass) fully rocking out at their most rockin’ moments. Matt Meyer brings a lot to the band, as well, not only with his beats but also with his other skills as it was revealed on set that he made the pedals. Unfortunately, there were some pedal malfunctions in the middle of the set, but that didn’t stop the boys from rocking out.

Sandman Viper Command boasts a pretty great fanbase and they certainly did not fail at disappointing their fans. The guys had quite a nice turnout for their set, with lots of people up at the front, many of which were singing along for a large portion of the set. They played a solid set at The Drake Underground and we look forward to seeing what these guys come up with next. They’ve got a full-length album out now, Everybody See This, and they play pretty frequently. Check these guys out! Buy them a shot while you’re at it because they’re pretty fun dudes too.
